01

The challenge before installation

At the customer's plant, the sawing machine used in the railway wheel production process had aged and was breaking down frequently. Production has to run continuously in three shifts around the clock, so any stoppage has a large effect on the operation as a whole, and an update to more reliable cutting equipment capable of long continuous running was needed.

The material is a solid steel billet approximately 400 mm in diameter. It has to be cut continuously and consistently to the lengths required for railway wheel production.

02

The equipment and technology proposed

We proposed cutting equipment from LINSINGER, which has an extensive track record in steel cutting. LINSINGER has supplied many cutting machines to steelmakers and to the railway wheel industry, and its particular strength is cutting large-diameter billets at high productivity.

For this installation we adopted a specification that cuts billets of roughly 400 mm diameter continuously and at high speed. Alongside the reliability required for 24-hour operation, automation keeps the load on operators down while production continues steadily.

Support through to installation

We began with a detailed survey of the customer's existing equipment, production conditions and required throughput. On that basis we did not simply replace the old saw: we looked at the machine layout and the connection to the upstream and downstream processes, and proposed a line configuration that rationalises production as a whole.

From adjusting the specification and the technical exchange with the manufacturer through delivery, installation and commissioning, we supported the project until the equipment was running reliably in the actual production environment.

04

What changed after installation

The new cutting equipment reduces the risk of stoppages from breakdowns and provides an environment that runs continuously and reliably even under a 24-hour, three-shift production system.

Automation has also raised the efficiency of the cutting process, which can now run almost unattended. This greatly reduces the load on operators and, by keeping the cutting conditions stable, supports a setup that supplies material of consistent quality to the railway wheel production that follows.
